The library district was formed in accordance with Referendum 1A on the ballot in the November election of 1996. The boundaries of the Library District correspond with the boundaries of Cheyenne County School District RE-5. The Library opened at the beginning of 1997. Shortly before, when the Town Complex was built, grant monies were received because a Library area has been included in the architect’s plans. That meant that the “home” for the new Library was in the Town Complex.

People living on the far eastern edge of Colorado's Central Plains in the pioneer days were isolated from the world, being some 200 miles away from Denver and about 400 miles away from Kansas City. In many cases, they were even isolated from each other, sometimes living miles apart. Trips to town for supplies often required a couple of days or more, depending on the weather.
This is why the Eastern Colorado Historical Society Telephone Museum in the 80-year-old local phone company building commemorates the radio wave telephone system at Cheyenne Wells, Colorado—the first in the United States.

Even law-abiding visitors to Cheyenne County love to spend a little time in “jail” where the Eastern Colorado Historical Society Jail Museum served as the county’s lock-up for nearly 75 years.
Designed by noted Denver Architect Robert S. Roeschlaub, the Cheyenne County Jail housed both the local ne’er-do-wells and the sheriff’s family with just one reported prisoner escape. Visit this notable entry on the National Register of Historical Places and, unlike our late 19th Century guests, you can walk right out the front door whenever you please.
Museum is open from Memorial Day to Labor Day during the year. Winter viewings are by appointment only by calling the Town at:
